Last decade saw rise of streaming services such as Netflix as internet became a major point in our lives. The streaming industry saw rise of other popular streaming platforms likes of AmazonTV and Hulu which are seemingly the biggest competitors in the market. With these streaming services currently providing enticing originals asides from popular television series, it’s certainly easy to see why they are becoming commonplace. Despite competition provided by other streaming services, Netflix’s CEO has said that biological need of sleep is the major obstacle in the business rather than other networks.
During recent Investor Relations Interview, he said, “You know, think about it, when you watch a show from Netflix, and you get addicted to it, you stay up late at night. We’re competing with sleep, on the margin. And so, it’s a very large pool of time.”
While he exaggerated the point, the network is currently providing full seasons of streaming TV series and movies and it’s certainly difficult to get attention from audiences with so many different options available to them. This point is certainly valid as other popular streaming services also caught up in the market as they are also providing decent contents. Despite the fact that these networks are currently providing more competition than ever, more people are becoming interested in streaming contents rather than waiting forever. He also said, “And so Amazon could do great work, and it would be very hard for it to affect us directly. It’s just — home entertainment is not a zero-sum game. And again, HBO’s success, despite our tremendous success, is a good way to illustrate that.”
As mentioned earlier, in the last few years, the streaming industry has managed to gain momentum and Netflix is trying to bring more innovative ways to attract more audiences. However, given that there isn’t enough time to consume all of the materials provided by the platform, it will be interesting to see how such services go on and attract more customers.
