After experiencing moderate success with its consoles for a number of years, Nintendo turned its fortune around with the release of Nintendo Switch few years earlier. Shortly upon its release, Switch became the fastest selling console of all time. Understandably, Nintendo has been pretty consistent in releasing new models. However, there’s no denying that when it comes to raw power of consoles, Nintendo Switch falls pretty short of the current generation of Xbox and PlayStation consoles. With both Microsoft are set to release their next generation of consoles later this year, a new report has revealed that Nintendo might be working on Switch Pro which should come out later this year.
As you might already know, there have been two new versions of Switch following the massive success of the initial model. One of them is the Switch Lite and other one is a refresh that promised to improve battery life. However, this is the first time we are hearing anything about Nintendo Switch Pro.
According to the report, the upcoming console might not contain best possible hardware to rival Sony and Microsoft. If the report is accurate, then Nintendo and Nvidia are currently working together on a custom chip that will improve performance of the upcoming console. Interestingly, the upcoming console might not support 4K output if you were hoping to get 4k support anytime soon.
This news is disappointing considering Nvidia’s Tegra X1, chip that powers the current Switch consoles are already capable of supporting 4K output. While other products such as Android TV Shield devices already outputs 4K, Nintendo revealed that the Switch performs a lot more data processing to render 4K video output when the console is in TV mode. While the new chip will definitely improve performance, it won’t be enough to support 4K.
At the moment, there’s not a lot of details to go on about the upcoming console. According to the outlet, the chip is still in development. As a result, we might have to wait little bit longer to get next Switch. If Nintendo is indeed working on a new model, we should learn more about it in the coming months.
